Avi Oster

Senior Partner Architect

Mr. Oster Born and raised in Israel, studied biology and architecture at the world-renowned Technion Israel Institue in Haifa, before

being recruited by I.M. Pei in 1989 to work in New York. He followed this with a number of years as a Design Consultant working with select architecture firms on high end, large scale projects. These included residential projects such as 45 Wall street ( the first downtown New York office building to be converted into apartments ), retail developments such as the DKNY store in Montreal and cultural spaces such as the Childrens Museum of the East End on Long Island.

Avi launched Avi Oster Architecture in 2002 and continues to develop a signature style that is driven by

technology, function and beauty. A kind of organic modernism, where asymmetrical forms and details work together to create a balance and symmetry in the whole.

His creative process begins in nature and an interest in the natural evolution of form and function.

Essentially, the realisation that nature uses nothing more or less than is needed and yet still exhibits great diversity, beauty and functionality . These ideas are embodied in spaces that exhibit an elegance of form that both stimulate and lift the senses whilst maintaining an intuitive, natural flow related to their users varied needs. This focus on the essence of a structure is achieved using innnovative materials and techniques that allow the elimination of ornamentation, and a reduction of mass and materials

3 West 13th Street in New York, Mr. Oster’s contribution to the current renaissance in New
York architecture and ensures his place as one of the designers who will shape and form the city of the

future. A sleek, sexy, boutique building that combines residential and business use, it is the perfect

embodiment of Avi’s approach to his work, an intuitive, organic philosophy that fully realises the natural relationship of design and function. technology and beauty become entwined.

The Cristiano Cora hair studio on the second floor of 3 West 13th street is the full expression of these principles. Created for a hair designer whose signature look is both functional and beautiful, the clean lines and sensuous curves decry the notion that somehow functionality is not compatible with beauty. Indeed, the feeling that one gets on entering the studio is that of stepping into a future where luxury, technology and beauty become entwined.
